Worldbuilding Master Class

David Farland's Worldbuilding Master Class

To create a blockbuster tale, you must learn to transport the reader to another time and place. In this intimate workshop, Dave takes you through world building in fantasy, historical fiction, and science fiction, including dystopias and utopias.

You will learn how to view the setting as a character and source of conflict, how to create planets, new life forms, societies, economic, magic and political systems and so on. You’ll watch popular films where the writer did it right, and you'll perform exercises where you brainstorm your own world, create your settings, write key descriptions and scenes, and have them critiqued by the rest of the group and by Dave himself..

Dave will cover:

  • Different kinds of planetoids, including asteroids, terrestrial planets, gas giants, and stars for those building a world from scratch
  • Elements needed to sustain life
  • Geography and how it influences the way civilizations begin and develop
  • Creating or playing with a world that offers potential conflicts to keep it interesting
  • Trade services and power systems—how they work and how characters can use them to gain the upper hand
  • Creating or taking advantage of other languages, including nonverbal language
  • How history can influence a people and culture, including false histories such as myths and fables)
  • And much more!

Refund Policy for Writing Workshops

At times, people need to cancel from workshops due to circumstances beyond their control. However, when this happens, it incurs certain administrative costs. Furthermore, if a student withdraws too close to the workshop, we may have seats that cannot be sold, seats that have been held for months, and this does real damage to our ability to continue these services.

Our Policy, should a student need to back out from any workshop:

  • Apply all of the funds to a future workshop
  • The student may sell membership to another writer
  • 60 days before the workshop: funds will be returned minus $25 for administrative costs
  • 30-60 days before the workshop: we will try to sell that student’s seat and still refund all monies, less $25 for administrative costs, however if we are unable to sell that seat, 50% of the tuition will be forfeit
  • 30 days or less before the workshop: 50% of the funds will be returned
