Kickstarting Your Career

This is the second of Dave’s video lecture series. Dave has helped numerous authors hit the New York Times Bestseller lists, so one of his most frequent questions is “How can I break into writing quickly?” In this series of lectures, Dave talks about some of the steps you need to take in order to build a successful career as a writer. This goes especially well with his book Million Dollar Book Signings, included in the Super Writers Bundle.

Lesson 1: Introduction. The average writer takes fourteen years to become a bestseller. Dave began winning writing contests within one year, sold his first three novels on spec, and stayed on the science fiction bestseller list for five months with his first novel. Here, he discusses what you need to do to create an effective plan.

Lesson 2: Consider your Resources. There are dozens of resources for writers. You would be surprised at how many of them are free or inexpensive. Dave will give you some recommendations for podcasts, blogs, books, and so on.

Lesson 3: Write Every Day. We learn by doing. Dave discusses how to get on a routine so that you turn writing from a goal into a habit.

Lesson 4: Take Writing Classes. Writing courses are valuable because it lets us approach learning in an orderly way and it allows us to get feedback on our work. While some courses may be taught by ineffective instructors or may have a curriculum that misdirects the author, other courses may be extremely beneficial.

Lesson 5: Get Feedback. Writing is a performance art. A new author needs feedback, and not from just one instructor. Dave talks here about how to find wise readers, and how to get them to judge your performance.

Lesson 6: Set a Bar. Most writers are afraid to set goals regarding the quality of their work. They’re like high-jumpers who refuse to set a bar, and because they don’t have any goals, they tend to underperform. In this lesson, Dave talks about the importance of setting goals not just for the quantity of writing you do, but for the quality.

Lesson 7: Gain Story Mastery. Many writing classes focus primarily on writing technique, but readers tend to care more for the quality of a story than for the brilliance of a writer’s prose. In this lesson, Dave discusses the importance of learning how to create a powerful plot.

Lesson 8: Get on a Career Path. Most writers begin their careers thinking only about how to come up with a story, not on how to create an illustrious career. Dave will be the first to admit that his own career left him meandering through various genres for years. Here he talks about how to define yourself as a writer, by working in the area that you love the most.

Lesson 9: Conclusion. Here, Dave reviews some of the important points made in this seminar.
