Lesson 1: From Generalities to Specifics—Many writers compose in vague generalities. For example they use “tree” instead of telling us whether the tree is a palm, redwood or Joshua tree. Learn to focus your writing to convey specific, meaningful information.
Lesson 2: Precision in Character—Create a character’s physical body, interior emotions, major conflicts and dreams, family background, hopes and fears, recent history, and so on. By the time you’re done, you’ll have a character that comes to life.
Lesson 3: Precision in Setting—Learn to apply more than a dozen techniques to bring any setting to life,
Lesson 4: Beats in Dialogue—Focus first on having characters speak interesting dialog, then add the descriptions that bring the dialog to life.
Lesson 5: Argument—Discover the importance of arguments in your prose, learn to create an argument and escalate it in interesting ways.
Lesson 6: Hooks—Learn eight different types of hooks for a chapter opening, and how to choose the best one, while possibly integrating more hooks as necessary into your scene.
Lesson 7: Narration—Learn to narrate a scene in beautiful, fascinating ways.
Lesson 8: Metaphors and Similes—Create powerful metaphors and similes to bring your tale to life and inspire your audience.
Lesson 9: Theme—Identify the themes in your novel, learn how to do deal with them how to tease them out for a tale that reaches deep into the hearts and minds of your readers.
Each section includes reading assignments and exercises to strengthen the lessons you’ll learn. Assignments will be critiqued by Dave. You also have access to weekly conference calls with Dave where you’ll have the opportunity to get real-time answers to your questions.
